Installing Zello

Download and install Zello by following these steps.

  1. Open browser in BlackBerry.
  2. Go to http://zello.com/bb/.
  3. Select “Download Zello” from the Zello web page.
  4. Select “Allow” from the Applications Permissions screen. (If needed. Sometimes this shows up on updates.)
  5. Select “Download” from the download screen.

After installing, the Zello Z icon appears on your screen. Select the icon to launch Zello. You’re on your way enjoying live conversations!

Signing into an existing account

If you’ve created a Zello account on another platform, select “I already have a Zello account” and follow the prompts to sign in.

If you need help with the password, do the following steps.

  1. Select “Options” from the phone’s Menu.
  2. Select “Account” from Options.
  3. Select “Forgot password.”
  4. Enter email associated with Zello account.
  5. Go to your email app to look for an email from Zello.
  6. Go to link from email to reset your password.
  7. Enter new password twice.
  8. Select “Change password”.

And you’re set with your new password.

Creating an account

If this is your first time using Zello, follow these steps to create a Zello account.

  1. Select “I don’t have a Zello account.”
  2. Enter your desired username.
  3. Enter password twice to make sure it’s exactly the way you want it.
  4. Enter your email. (We promise not to email you anything. This comes in handy if you ever need to change or reset your password.)
  5. Enter your cell phone number. (It helps your connections find you.)
  6. Select “Create” and you’re in!

Zello gets right to work to search for people who may have already invited you to Zello.

If you have problems with creating an account, make sure your APN settings are configured properly.

Assigning the PTT button

You can assign the button you’d like to use to talk with these steps.

  1. Select “Options” from the phone’s Menu.
  2. Select “Push to talk button.”
  3. Select “Set PTT key.”
  4. Press the desired button.

And you’re set.

Doing a sound test

You’ve landed on the Contacts page. Want to do a sound test? Do these steps.

  1. Select “echo.”
  2. Press and hold the push-to-talk button.
  3. Say anything, sing a song, or tell a story.
  4. Let go of the button to hear Zello play what you just recorded.

If you can’t hear anything, verify your microphone is on and turned up to a comfortable volume.

Adding contacts

Now let’s fill that Contact page.

  1. Select “Add a contact …” from the Menu to start.
  2. Enter a Zello user ID, email, or phone number into the search bar.
  3. Select the Search button.

If the user has an account, select the user ID, “Add user” and Zello sends a connection request.

If the user is not found, you can send an invite by email or text message using the following steps.

  1. Select “Invite friends” from the phone’s Menu. Zello creates an email with with most of the information filled in for you.
  2. Edit the message to your heart’s content
  3. Add email addresses.
  4. Happy? Select “Send” to email the invite.

For contacts who have Zello accounts, Zello sends them an connection request. Until contacts approve your request, they will show with ‘Awaiting authorization” status in your contact-list. As soon as they go online, they will see a notice with an option to either confirm or decline your request. After they agree to connect, their status will change to Available or Busy.

All connections require approval to limit spam. We hate spam, too.

Contacting users

When your contacts appear online, you can start talking. Select the user’s name, press and hold the push-to-talk button, and say something. Release the button when you’re done talking.

If the person is Available, you should get a reply soon. When someone is Busy (not available), Zello saves your message in history for later listening. If a contact shows as Standby, it means the user doesn’t have the app running at the moment but you can send him or her offine messages.

Receiving calls when talking to a single contact

You can still receive calls when you’re talking to a contact or channel.

Sending a call alert

You can alert a contact and include optional text. Receivers will hear an immediate tone or feel a vibration that will be repeated every minute until they dismiss or reply to the alert. You can add a text message or links.

  1. Select the contact you want to alert.
  2. Select “Send call alert” from the phone’s Menu.
  3. Enter text, if you wish.
  4. Select “OK.”

Beware, this also sends an audio tone that repeats every minute until the person responds or clears the alert.

Talking in a channel

To talk in a channel, select the channel name, and then press and hold the push-to-talk button when you want to talk. Release the button when you finish talking. As long as no one else is talking, you can talk away.

Using Solo mode

Solo mode isn’t yet available for the BlackBerry. If you want to have a private conversation without interruptions from a channel, disconnect from the channel. To disconnect a channel, select the channel and choose “Disconnect channel” from the Options menu.

Searching Channels

You can talk to 1 to 300 people by joining an existing channel.

To find and join a channel, follow these steps.

  1. Select “Add a channel” from the phone’s Menu.
  2. Enter a channel name or keyword into the search box and Zello provides a list of matches.
  3. Select the channel name for information about the selected channel.
  4. Sound like an interesting channel? Select “Add channel” to put it in your list of channels.

To talk in the channel, select the channel name and press the push-to-talk button when you want to talk. As long as no one else is talking, you can talk away.

Anytime you go to the list of Channels, you’ll hear every conversation for all active channels.

Creating Channels

You can create your own channel to talk about an interest, activities, or just about anything goes. Follow these steps to create a channel.

  1. Select “Options” from the phone’s Menu.
  2. Select “Create a channel” from the “Options” menu.
  3. Enter a name for the channel
  4. Enter a description of the channel. If you want to make it easier for people to find your channel and stay on topic, ensure the description explains the topic of the channel and includes related keywords.
  5. Select the channel type you wish to use. Your choices are “Anyone can listen and talk” and “Only I can talk, anyone can listen” in which only the owner can talk.
  6. Decide whether to add a password for accessing the channel (optional). If yes, tap the box next to “Require password.”

Satisfied with your channel settings? Select “Create” to start inviting online contacts to your channel.

If you have contacts, select “Invite” to invite your contacts to your channel. If they’re not online, you can invite them when they’re online.

Want to make changes to your channel?

  1. Select your channel’s name from the list of channels.
  2. Select “Edit channel” from your phone’s Menu.
  3. Edit channel details as needed.
  4. Select “Apply changes” when you’re done.

Changing your status

When your status is Available, all incoming messages play back in real time unless you’ve changed your options. When you change your status to Busy, Zello saves your messages in History. You can access them at a convenient time. You enter text to display to others when you’re busy. To do this, select “T” and enter the message. When you switch to busy, the text message will appear.

When you are offline, Zello does not save any new messages. It retains the messages you already have prior to going offline. Also, when you’re offline, other users see you in Standby mode and they can still send you offline messages.

If you don’t use Zello for one week or longer, it will automatically change your status to Offline for other users. Then you will no longer be able to receive offline messages or alerts.

To change your status, press “S” and select your new status.

Listening to messages (History)

To listen to messages, select the Channel or Contact and “H.” You can also access history by selecting “Show history” from the Options menu. Scroll to the message to play and select it.

Replay last message

To replay a message, select Menu button and “Replay last message.”

Identifying when you received your last message

From the talk screen, you’ll see a green circle next to a channel or contact. Select the contact and choose “Show history” from the Options menu. The last entry shows the last time someone contacted you.

Managing notifications

Zello can notify you with an audio alert, visual alert, or vibrate. To change these options, do the following steps.

  1. Select “Options” from the phone’s Menu.
  2. Select “User interface.”
  3. Change the options to reflect your preference.
  4. Press the escape button on your phone to save the changes.

Exiting Zello

Unless you exit Zello, the app runs in the background regardless of your status. You’ll continue receiving messages from active channel conversations. To exit, select “Exit” from the phone’s Menu.
